Kesho Phou: Improved paddy variety

Panicle bearing in Kesho Phou

Shri Wahengbam Kesho Singh belongs to Bishnupur district of Manipur, one of the states in North Eastern States in India. His inquisitiveness inspired him to come up with a new variety from a single plant growing near his paddy field which was totally different in morphological appearance from those which were growing in nearby fields. The salient features of the variety are high yielding (80-95q/ha), long panicle, high number of seeds per panicle (310-320), high number of tillers per plant and good to taste. It is also tolerant to stem borer. He considers his variety as a Gift of God and wishes to develop additional paddy varieties.

General view of the variety

Salient characteristics of the variety
  • High yield
  • Long paniclewith high number of grains
  • Broad leaves and semi-erect culms
  • High number of tillers per plant
  • Tolerant to stem borer
  • High recovery percentage

National Innovation Foundation (NIF) facilitated the scientific experimental trial at Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur in 2016. The report showed that the variety possesses high yield due to yield contributing characteristics like high number of tillers per hill and number of filled grains per panicle. It was also found to be moderately tolerant to stem borer and neck blast.

The variety is being grown by approximately 350 farmers in Manipur. It was found from diffusion study conducted by National Innovation Foundation (NIF) during 2017 that the variety has been primarily disseminated through exchanging the seed materials with other fellow farmers and eventually distributed free of cost to several farmers in Manipur. As of today, he has sold only 420kg seed at very nominal rate.
